For seven days in September, Milan became the center of the fashion world. Milan Fashion Week, held September 22–28, presented the Spring/Summer 2027 collections of Italian and international designers before buyers, journalists, photographers, celebrities and other fashion-industry professionals.
Organized by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, Fashion Week is not held in a single convention hall. Instead, Milan itself becomes the venue. Runway shows and presentations take place throughout the city—in fashion-house headquarters, showrooms, historic buildings and specially selected spaces. Prada, for example, presented at Via Lorenzini, while other designers welcomed guests at locations stretching from Via Montenapoleone to Piazza Cordusio.
The week's purpose extends well beyond spectacle. Designers introduce collections months before they reach stores, giving retail buyers an opportunity to determine what they may purchase for the coming season. At the same time, journalists, photographers and social media carry the newest styles to a worldwide audience. Some runway creations are intentionally flamboyant—designed as much to attract attention and express a designer's artistic vision as to be worn exactly as shown. The 2026 program was enormous. The published schedule included 60 runway shows—54 physical and six digital—along with 88 presentations, plus numerous exhibitions, cultural programs and special events.
Milan's rise as a fashion capital accelerated during the 1970s and 1980s as Italian ready-to-wear became an international force. Today it stands alongside Paris, London and New York as one of fashion's principal global centers.
