That was the mantra of Leonardo Fioravanti, a man who sought to master medicine through hands-on care and treatment of the sick and lame.
Fioravanti was committed to understanding the human anatomy by performing surgeries and inventing different medicines to counter the effects of diseases and physical ailments. In his day, he was the most famous physician in Italy.

In The Professor of Secrets: Mystery, Medicine, and Alchemy in Renaissance Italy, historian William Eamon covers the breadth of Leonardo Fioravanti’s life and achievements in medicine.
Born in Bologna in 1517, Fioravanti grew to become a physician, surgeon, alchemist, inventor, and tireless traveler. Rejecting the rigid medical establishment of his day, he sought knowledge wherever he could find it—from apothecaries, craftsmen, soldiers, and ordinary people whose practical experience often proved more valuable than university lectures. As a young man, Fioravanti studied medicine at the University of Bologna only to leave school for work as a barber. In 16th century Italy, barbers performed surgeries not just to cut and shape hair. Fioravanti found the classroom experience too stifling. He sought the adventure of learning by interacting with patients with hopes of finding ways to improve the field of medicine. He became excellent at his work. The sickest among Italy's elite often requested his help as a last resort.

Eamon traces Fioravanti's remarkable career across Renaissance Italy where he performed daring surgeries, investigated mysterious cures, and searched for the "secrets" of nature. At a time when medicine, chemistry, and alchemy often overlapped, Fioravanti believed that experimentation and observation—not blind acceptance of ancient authorities—were the keys to understanding the natural world.
The most difficult cases were brought to Fioravanti—wherever he settled—be it in Naples, Florence, Rome or Venice. He was often the last hope for the suffering patient. A woman of prestige in Naples once asked him to find a way to heal her of stomach pain she had suffered for years. He did so with a liquid concoction created for her to drink. After consuming the serum, she coughed up a live organism the size of a fist. He displayed the creature in a glass jar at the local pharmacy. In another case in Florence, he developed a set of balms to heal severe cuts and lacerations for soldiers. His knowledge of herbs and natural materials was the best in Italy. This allowed him to create a number of medicinal applications for a variety of uses.
