Return to Corleone…
The Sicilian town forever linked to Cosa Nostra’s bloodiest era, is again at the center of an anti-Mafia investigation.
On May 5, Italian Carabinieri arrested Mario Grizzaffi, 60, nephew of the late Cosa Nostra boss Totò Riina, on orders from a Palermo investigating judge.
Authorities allege Grizzaffi was the leader of the Corleone Mafia district, inheriting the reigns of power from his uncle Riina. Arrested with Grizzaffi were Mario Gennaro, 54, and Pietro Maniscalco, 63.
The suspects were taken into custody in and around Corleone.

Six-Year Investigation
The Mafia is alive and well in the countryside around Corleone.
That is the conclusion made by prosecutors from a police investigation between 2017 and 2023. Cosa Nostra of Sicily maintained control through intimidation, theft, damage to property, and the burning of agricultural vehicles.
The Corleonesi Mafia went old school. They utilized the system of Cosa Nostra’s past to pressure farmers and landowners. Territorial domination was the method: a throwback to a century ago when the clan hid in mountains and raided caravans in the Sicilian countryside.

Arrest and Detain
The investigating judge in this case is Judge Claudia Rosini of Palermo. She is the magistrate who signed the preventative detention orders tied to the anti-Mafia investigation into the alleged Corleone clan activities.
In Italy’s judicial system, an investigating judge — called a GIP (Giudice per le Indagini Preliminari) — reviews evidence presented by prosecutors and authorizes arrests, wiretaps, searches, or other measures during the preliminary investigation phase.
The prosecutors leading the broader investigation were from the Palermo District Anti-Mafia Directorate, headed by chief prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia.

Rural Racket
The suspects were reportedly arrested on a wide range of organized crime-related allegations tied to the alleged reconstitution of a Mafia network in the Corleone countryside. According to Italian prosecutors, the primary charges include:
Mafia association (associazione mafiosa) — participation in or leadership of Cosa Nostra under Italy’s anti-Mafia laws.
Extortion — intimidating farmers and landowners into compliance or payments.
Arson — the burning of agricultural vehicles and equipment.
Theft — stealing agricultural products and materials.
Illegal control and intimidation of territory — prosecutors allege the suspects exercised “para-institutional” authority over disputes, land transactions, and rural activity in the area around Corleone.
Investigators claim the group used threats and intimidation to pressure local farmers, with some reportedly seeking the clan’s approval before purchasing land — a tactic prosecutors say echoed the old methods of the historic Corleonesi faction led by Totò Riina and Bernardo Provenzano.
Particularly troubling is the allegation that some farmers sought “permission” from the clan before buying land. That detail suggests not merely criminal activity, but a kind of shadow government — a Mafia authority operating beside, and against, the legitimate institutions of the Italian state.

Proud to be a Mafiosi
Wiretaps reportedly captured Mario Gennaro speaking with pride about his induction into Cosa Nostra at age 18 in 1990.
According to prosecutors, Gennaro recalled the presence of “him” — understood to mean Totò Riina — at the ceremony. Rather than shame, investigators say, Gennaro spoke with nostalgia, revealing the enduring hold of Mafia identity across generations.
Judge Claudia Rosini described the alleged network as a “rural Mafia” still fully operational. This is organized crime unlike the glamorous portrayals of cinema. Sicily’s agricultural economy is the prime target for underworld activity.
For Italy, the arrests are another reminder that Cosa Nostra has not vanished. The age of Riina is over. Yet, his shadow is cast in Corleone.
