A SHOUT OUT FOR “THE WHISPER MAN”
Russos’ New Film Is a Netflix Hit
A Mystery Thriller Starring Robert De Niro and Adam Scott

By Rami Chiaviello

The most recent collaboration between Netflix and the Russo siblings is—The Whisper Man.

The film, based on the novel of the same title by Alex North, marks another notable achievement for AGBO Studios and its Italian American principals—Anthony and Joe Russo and sister, Angela Russo-Otstot.

Count The Whisper Man as another cinematic success for the Russos of Hollywood.

_____

Eerie Atmosphere

The Whisper Man follows Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott), a recently widowed novelist who moves with his eight-year-old son, Jake, to the quiet suburban town of Garretton. But not all is quaint and safe in their new surroundings. In the 1990s, Garretton was the scene of a series of grisly murders of young boys committed by a serial killer known as the Whisper Man. The killer was eventually apprehended by Tom’s estranged father, Detective Peter Willis (Robert De Niro). Soon, Jake goes missing in circumstances eerily similar to those of the original Whisper Man cases. Tom and his father must confront their generational rifts to search for Jake and save the town from another series of killings.

Directed by James Ashcroft and produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, and Angela Russo-Otstot, The Whisper Man also stars Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton. The film is a short yet entertaining revival of the old mystery-thrillers that once dominated Hollywood. The movie’s dark and brooding atmosphere, reminiscent of iconic films such as Mystic River and The Lovely Bones, nevertheless remains distinctive in its own right. The story explores themes of generational guilt, trauma, and the legacy we leave behind for our children.

_____

Quiet Desperation

In a supporting role, Michelle Monaghan returns to the mystery genre as the young and eager Detective Amanda Beck, tasked with finding the copycat Whisper Man. Monaghan brings a grounded quality to the investigation, serving as the audience’s surrogate as she uncovers new information alongside the viewer. She provides a much-needed counterbalance to the film’s heavier emotional material. Her character serves a key purpose, helping the mystery unfold through a steady progression of questions, clues, and revelations to keep the audience fully engaged.

The lead star is no doubt Robert De Niro, who brings a veteran presence to the cast as Peter Willis. This is a role particularly well suited to his understated dramatic strengths. His performance relies less on the explosive intensity that has defined many of his past roles. Here, he draws upon restraint and reflection. Peter is a man who has spent years living with the consequences of an emotionally taxing and damaging investigation into the original Whisper Man. De Niro conveys that history with quiet pain. His relationship with Scott’s character ultimately becomes the emotional backbone of the film.

_____

Dangerous Setting

The Whisper Man understands that a mystery doesn’t need to constantly overwhelm its audience with twists and turns, violence, or cheap scares. Much of the film’s suspense comes from its setting. Quiet suburban streets, isolated homes, and the lingering history of the Whisper Man create an environment in which something always feels slightly off. Even when nothing particularly frightening is happening, the film maintains an unsettling sense of unease.

That restraint is especially effective. The Whisper Man isn’t simply a film about a serial killer. The story is ultimately more interested in what fathers pass down to their children: fear, resentment, guilt, and trauma.

As both a visual and narrative homage to the great thrillers of the past, The Whisper Man succeeds admirably. It takes the familiar ingredients of the genre and uses them to tell a surprisingly emotional story about fathers, sons, and the wounds that can haunt a family long after the original trauma has passed. The Whisper Man is well worth watching and is now streaming on Netflix.
